Tech toys help brain injury patients

June 28, 2011 in Technology

Handheld computers and smart phones have been found to help improve the memories of brain injury patients.

Handheld computers and smart phones have been found to help improve the struggling memories of brain injury patients.

After suffering a brain injury many people struggle to remember anything for more than a few minutes.

They have to rely on writing endless notes in diaries or on having carers, relatives and friends to remind them to do a range of tasks including taking vital medication or shopping.

Some also have problems remembering their family, friends and carers.

But a new study has found that tablet computers, smart phones and other handheld digital devices can improve their memories.

Researchers from the Royal Rehabilitation Centre in Sydney spent eight weeks training a group of 21 brain injury patients to use personal digital assistants (PDAs) – palmtop computers – so they would no longer have to rely on nagging or diaries.

The calendars featured on the devices were used to help participants keep track of appointments, medication times or daily tasks like doing the washing. Read the rest of this entry →

The Telstra Ultimate® Mobile Wi-Fi - Black

The Telstra Ultimate® Mobile Wi-Fi - Black

Australians now have access to the world’s fastest 3G hotspot with the launch today of the Telstra Ultimate® Mobile Wi-Fi – a battery-powered device that shares Next G® mobile broadband connectivity with up to five devices simultaneously.

The Telstra Ultimate® Mobile Wi-Fi provides blistering download speeds ranging from 1.1Mbps to 20Mbps in Ultimate coverage areas which include Australia’s capital city CBDs and associated airports, selected metropolitan hubs and more than 100 regional centres*. Business customers will be able to purchase the super-fast device from today while a BigPond version will go on sale for consumers on 19 July.

Warwick Bray, Executive Director, Telstra Mobile Products said a surge in laptop, tablet and smartphone ownership meant Australians were increasingly turning to fast mobile broadband connectivity to get the most out of their devices on the go.

“Australians are now taking a growing range of Wi-Fi enabled devices with them when they’re outside the home and office. However managing separate mobile broadband accounts for each gadget can be a hassle. The Ultimate® Mobile Wi-Fi device makes it easy for customers to connect up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices simultaneously at speeds up to four times faster than currently achievable using similar competitor 3G Wi-Fi hotspot products in capital CBDs and selected regional areas. Hackers steal Sega user information

Gaming giant Sega has become the latest hacking victim to have its user data exposed.

Gaming giant Sega has become the latest hacking victim to have its user data
exposed.

An email was sent by Sega to its customers using the Sega Pass system on
Friday admitting personal details including email addresses, dates of birth and
protected passwords had been taken.
But the company said no financial information was stolen.
The system was taken offline on Thursday as user passwords were reset, but at
the time of writing the Sega Pass system was still unavailable online.
Sega users have been alerted that they might receive suspicious emails asking
for personal details.
The email from Sega to customers said: ‘We have launched an investigation
into the extent of the breach of our public systems.
‘We have identified that a subset of Sega Pass members’ emails addresses,
dates of birth and encrypted passwords were obtained. To stress, none of the
passwords obtained were stored in plain text.
‘Please note that no personal payment information was stored by Sega as we
use external payment providers, meaning your payment details were not at risk
from this intrusion.’ Read the rest of this entry →

Google puts British Library books online

June 22, 2011 in Internet, Technology

More than 250,000 books are to be made available online in a deal between Google and the British Library.

A treatise on a stuffed hippopotamus, an 18th-century English primer for
Danish sailors and a description of the first engine-driven submarine are among
250,000 books to be made available online in a deal between Google and the
British Library.
The agreement, announced on Monday, will let internet users read, search,
download and copy thousands of texts published between 1700 and 1870.
It is a small step toward the library’s goal of making the bulk of its 14
million books and one million periodicals available in digital form by 2020.

‘So far we have only been able to digitise quite a small fraction of the
global collection,’ said the library’s chief executive, Lynne Brindley. ‘There
is a long way to go.’

The deal with Google, which will see 40 million pages digitised over the next
three years, will offer online researchers a selection of rarely seen works from
an era of social, political, scientific and technological change that took in
the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution and the American war of
independence. Read the rest of this entry →
